-
The trip starts with pick up from your hotel in Quito at 2,850 m.
The journey will take us up over the pass of Papallacta, Ecuador’s highest mountain pass at 3250m. We will stop at the hot springs on the way. The hot springs are fed by Antisana Ecuador’s 4th highest volcano at 5,753 m. as we approach the Baeza area.
We will take a moment to hike around this area following a guided trail to observe high Andes plant and bird life. We will then descend to our jungle lodge accommodations near the town of Archidona where dinner will be served and we will spend the night.
-
Today we will head out to the headwaters of the Upper Napo.
A class 3 with roller coaster wave train rapids interspersed by large pools for jumping out and swimming. This river is the most important life sustaining river in the region for the local indigenous communities as they use it for fishing, farming and commuting down to the lower amazon basin. The head waters flow from the national park los llanganates, one of Ecuador’s national parks and one of the most remote areas of south America.
After a full day out on the river we will finish the trip at the small town of Puerto Napo, one of the old major ports for commercial trade into the amazon.
-
After breakfast we will embark on a class 3 – 4 raft trip into the Jondachi Hollin river gorge. A spectacular primary rainforest river descent.
This river forms part of the ecological corridor that connects the Andes with the Amazon and is one of the most important in the region. After a safety brief and outfitting into a PFD and helmet the trip will start. The river starts out on a lower volume technical style of rafting before reaching the confluence with the hollin river where we will encounter some large roller coaster rapids.
The Gorge gets deeper at this point offering some very impressive walls of dense foliage and waterfalls cascading in. Monkeys, sloths and even the elusive Jaguar has been observed on this river. Mid way we will stop for lunch on the rivers side. Further down we will encounter the biggest rapid of the day called the waffle maker. After making it through this rapid we still have some exciting rapids to navigate before reaching a riverside lodge located deep in the river gorge.
Here you will spend the night. The hosts of the lodge are very friendly and are professional chefs. If the evening is clear and dry, a fire is often lit on the beach so you can enjoy the sounds of the jungle and the river echoing off the jungle walls.
-
After a relaxed morning breakfast, you will have the option of a jungle walk to observe flora and fauna and some very large trees. Here the bird life is abundant, monkeys and parrots are often seen on this route.
After lunch we will start to make our way out from the lodge to where our vehicle is waiting to take you on to your next destination being either Baños or Quito.
