What do people say about River People Ecuador?

Author: Nicolás Piva | Date: 6/30/2025 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

5/5 - We did the overnight rafting and camping with Alex & Victor. They are serious professionals. Despite our lack of skill, I was never concerned for our safety. The food provided was much better than expected, and there was plenty of it to go around. They provided a tent, sleeping bags, and even sleeping mats to be comfortable. We were able to store our bags safely in their warehouse while we were gone overnight. The fun started from the hike down to the rapids and didn't stop until it was over. 100% would recommend, and hopefully I can make it back for a longer trip with them.

I would never paddle with any other outfitter here. these guys KNOW the rivers and are super helpful and competent.

I participated in the 7-day class 3 to class 4 whitewater kayak progression class. The overall experience was excellent. We started on a fun class 3 big water river to warm up on the first day and then progressed to a variety of other fun and technical rivers. Highlight of the trip was paddling through remote jungle gorges with amazing scenery. The leader, Alex Dent, did a great job preparing and supporting me through every step of my first trip to Ecuador. We discussed the attributes of the rivers to make a selection each day while factoring in weather and river levels. The skills learned were a huge boost to my capabilities and confidence. I'm now very comfortable with class 3+ and starting to run class 4 rivers with confidence. The food, lodging and hospitality of this all-inclusive package was excellent! I plan to come back to enjoy the great paddling/instruction, beautiful scenery/wildlife, hospitality and wonderful culture of Ecuador.

They are a very professional outfit who put my initial nerves at rest. Victor - our rafting guide was great, his English perfect and I felt extremely safe all day. There was a safety kayak too (Tim). Having local guides allows you a greater understanding of the area and culture. We had a great day rafting the Jondachi-Hollin river - stunning scenery right in the heart of the rainforest. We were told the other rivers that other tours operate on aren't quite what they used to be due to illegal mining exploitation, so this was definitely the best option to get unspoiled scenery and we think River People are the only ones who raft this river. There are likely other companies who do the rafting in Tena cheaper, but these guys were definitely worth paying for - we got what we paid for, for sure. Transfers from Tena were included in the price along with a delicious and substantial lunch.

Best Rafting Guides! This is hands down the best place. I strongly recommend the 2 day rafting trip as you will have more time to raft and learn about the Amazon. They also will take you to a waterfall or two.

We really enjoyed our trip with River People! It was well prepared, safe and professional rafting trip in the most beautiful scenery of Jondachi and Holiin rivers. We had fun and loved everything-the rafting, camping, food (vegetarian option is available and super tasty) and of course the views! High rocks covered with green forest, waterfalls and clear water. Highly recommended!

Really excellent guides, and a top quality experience all around. We have paddled white water in Honduras and across the United States, and this was some of the most beautiful white water we’ve ever paddled, even though it was very low water. Alex is Irish/Ecuadorian, so if English is your first language, it’s a lot of fun to paddle with somebody with an Irish accent. :-) The food was exemplary both days. I felt very safe at all times, despite paddling some pretty challenging white water, Alex was super supportive and just the right balance of guidance but giving me plenty of space to make my own mistakes :-) my wife and daughter rafted, and had a great time as well. Day one was a beautiful narrow Jungle River, second day was a more open large water experience. Personally, I enjoyed the narrow Jungle River more, but both have their charm. It’s a very family run place, which we also loved, because some of the other companies are a little more of a bro culture. We also ended up staying with Alex‘s brother at his kayak lodge that evening, and had a really nice time there as well. River people is great, you won’t go wrong choosing them.

Absolutely amazing trip. We were newbies on the white water and were somewhat hesitant on our abilities, but Victor and Tim made us feel comfortable out there and the whole trip was a dream of excitement and lush green, watery adventure. Total triumph! Thanks to the lovely crew and the incredible surroundings. 110 pct recommended!!

Alex and his team are the best kayak instructors I've learned from, by far. After taking lessons from instructors in Chile, Costa Rica, and the United States, I can say that Alex cultivates a learning approach that is extremely informational, professional, and most importantly, safe. Added to the fact that Tena rivers and Ecuador might comprise the best concentration of whitewater to be run year round anywhere in the world, it's a no brainier. From gear evaluation to reading water, technical paddling skills to rolling, knowledge of Ecuadorian rivers to what you need on a day by day basis, Alex is the man. I struggled for a couple seasons on dialing in my combat roll in whitewater...Alex was able to lead me down technical and big water class III/IV, evaluate my existing skill set, and nail down what I needed to perfect my roll and braces. Via practice drills, river running, mental exercises, and good time barbeques, I learned more from River People in three weeks than I did from others in over two years. I can't convey how valuable this is in the world of kayaking and whitewater boating if you want to progress and not unlearn other bad habits instilled by others. And to approach the entire curriculum from a mindset of safety while not taking advantage of valuable time and monetary resources...I had yet to come by that from other instructors. Whether you're trying to learn the basics of whitewater kayaking, build upon your existing experience, or grab firsthand beta from a renowned Ecuadorian river runner, I can't recommend Alex and his team enough. I'll back for more without a doubt!

I did the three day jungle tour and it was absolutely perfect! Would highly recommend. We got to stay in an authentic but still perfectly clean and comfortable cabins, where awesome food was prepared and there was always a fire lit. It was three days of spending time with a super friendly bunch and getting up to awesome activities! The activities, including hikes, waterfalls swimming and fishing, were amazing, got to hold a snake, catch and eat a piranha and saw so much diversity of flora and fauna throughout the day and night! Awesome varied range of activities and felt very authentic throughout. Just what was needed!

I went on a week-long guided kayaking trip. Alex was a great guide! He selected the best river section each day based on water levels and my skill level. Safety was a priority. I even got him to take me to a few caves! The food was very good, especially the homemade lunches. The river lodge was unavailable while I was there, but he put me up in a good hotel in Tena. I would definitely recommend RiverPeople to anyone wanting a guided kayaking trip in Ecuador.

My father visited me in Ecuador for my 29th birthday and we booked a rafting trip on the Jondachi & Hillon. It was just after the season ended but Alex & Poncho were kind enough to take just the two of us out alone. We met at the headquarters, signed a few forms, borrowed some shoes, and left for the river. They carried the boat down to the river for us (thanks guys!) and Poncho gave us instructions and a safety talk. Our day on the river was perfect. Poncho was our boat guide and Alex was in a kayak as a safety. The rapids were exciting and challenging but smooth calm water between to give us a break to enjoy the lush scenery. We stopped for lunch and ate delicious paninis and pineapple. They showed us some hieroglyphs in the rock, we relaxed and enjoyed the sun before getting back in the boats for round 2! There was a rock to jump off and a bit of swimming to cap off the day. Lovely day throughout from start to finish. A drive picked us up and took us back to our lodging. Thank you Alex & Poncho for a memorable day in the Amazon. We would definitely recommend River People Ecuador and hope to be back one day.

Put simply, you can't go wrong booking a trip with River People. I participated in a week long class 3-4 kaying trip, and it exceeded my expectations in every way. I was picked up in Quito by owners Alex and Adriana, and was able to paddle the same day once we made it down to Tena. The rest of the week was filled with world class rivers, delicious food, and friendly faces. Alex is one of the most knowledgeable kayakers in the upper Amazon basin and I felt safe at all times, he even brings along another guide for more difficult days on the river. Pretty much nowhere else in the world will you get a 2 to 1 guide to client ratio, and this is just one of the many things that made my Ecuador adventure exceptional. Do yourself a favor and reach out to Alex to start planning your personalized kayaking adventure.

The river people helped to pioneer the whitewater play in this region, and they deliver a high quality, industry standard experience. I guide and instruct on whitewater in the United States and they exceed the standards I have experienced back at home. They equip you well, give you the information you need and only go deeper if you are curious. Exceptional highlights - the guides actively work together to ensure the entire party on the river has a safe and appropriate experience, all boats stay in sight of one another for effective river communication and they have a safety kayaker to scout and observe boater skills. They checked everyone’s swimming ability in a safe section as a “fun” activity, but that allowed them to assess the abilities of all participants and it helped them make the choices of their lines more appropriate for the abilities of all boaters. The guides were exceptionally skilled, and stood apart from the other raft parties on the river that had many rafts flipping and looked like junk shows by comparison. My partner and I were placed in a smaller raft team with a guide named Carlos who had been working on the rivers in this area for 8 years, and his skill was outstanding. He was able to take an eager boat through class III rapids on lines to hit holes and waves that made it feel like the challenge of a lifetime while being 100% safe and in control. We did the class III section of the Jatun Yacu as a way to see a lot of river while having a great time. It was perfect!Carlos is a LEGEND of a rafter who had some particularly impressive river moves and was well complimented by even more seasoned river guides on the other rafts. We cannot recommend the river people enough, you will not regret any programming you sign up for with them! To round out your visit, staying at the REMA kayak lodge (run by the same family) makes your stay easy and logistically so smooth! Our only regret was not spending more time with them!

This company is amazing. I spent three days in the jungle with the company, spent time with Pancho and Jose who showed us how to camp, survive and what food to eat. We then went white water rafting for the first time. We felt so safe and the lunch was delicious. I would recommend this company to anyone, especially Pancho. Thanks so much for an amazing Ecuador experience! Our group cannot thank you enough

We did the 2 day whitewater rafting trip! It was incredible!! Daniel and Alex are great guides. They speak English, are knowledgeable about the nature, and made rafting really fun. On the first day we rafted some difficult rapids, hiked through a creek (make sure to wear strappy water shoes!) and camped at this sandy beach. It was beautiful! The beach had flushing toilets. Great experience. On the second day we rafted difficult and exhilarating rapids and did another hike to this waterfall where there are clay walls. Very cool! (Strappy water shoes necessary) Overall rafting was amazing, fun, and beautiful throughout. You will not regret doing this trip! Very organized trip and the meals were delicious!! There was so much food prepared, I ate way too much everytime :)

This was my 3rd rafting trip with THE RIVER PEOPLE. This company gets it right every time. From the planning, briefings, punctuality, equipment, and especially the skill of the operators, you cannot go wrong using this outfitter for your jungle activities. On this last trip, Alex was our guide and we did the 3 day package of whitewater rafting on the Napo, hiking El Gran Canyon, and caving north of Archidona.Transportation, meals and equipment were provided and were top notch. Alex is a very experienced river guide, and holds a wealth of local knowledge which he shared during the activities. He was constantly aware of the quick changing weather and adjusted the missions based on his client's safety. This is often not the case here in Ecuador.I would highly recommend The RIVER PEOPLE for excellent and safe outings while in the Amazonia are. We were also able to secure exceptional lodging while there for the week, ask them about it if you're booking a trip.

My friend and I climbed Cotopaxi and added a trip with the River People and what a great addition to any climb or stand alone adventure in Ecuador. Tim, Alex and staff provided an incredible adventure with one day river kayaking and the next day rafting in Class III and IV rapids. Truly amazing jungle and environment you can't see anywhere else. I cannot say enough great things about this company!!! I had been WW rafting a few time before this trip (in the USA), and was not impressed. HOWEVER, Tim & Alex changed that!! Now i understand why people find this so fun! Tim (in-raft guide) and Alex (safety kayak) are CLEAR experts! They have been doing this for many many years. At no point did i feel unsafe. I wasn't afraid of falling out (which i did, haha :-) ). Note, it does happen, but it's not a bad thing. We were the only people on the river that day. And apparently that is fairly common. This is not one of those raft companies that has 6-10 rafts chocked full of people crowding up the river. Nor are their guides inexperienced college kids who think they are "experts". Additionally, Tim & Alex are such fun and personable guys, for kids and adults. Simply hanging out with them was a delight. And the food was really good. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this company for group raft trips or group kayak trips. Top notch!!

Our river guide, Alex, made our entire day. He’s knowledgeable, safe, funny and so personable. We have whitewater rafted in several places before, and can tell you that the river people do it right. They kept us entertained while constantly scanning the rapids, us and each other. They had us HUSTLE to paddle but it was so much fun. This IS the best way to see the jungle! Thousands of years of fauna, of growth right in front of you. It’s overwhelming. We saw toucans, falcons, otters swimming and the biggest bird nests ever. When the water is down, you’ll get solid class III rapids and a thrill! When the water is up, it’s one heck of a ride!Thank you River People for a wonderful experience that we’ll never forget.

The crew at River People are so clearly highly skilled and knowledgeable that the entire trip was one of enjoyment without any room for trepidation or uncertainty. The white water rafting is fun because it’s scary, sure- but we always felt entirely safe and taken care of. Our limits were pushed and we felt hugely rewarded for the times our guide knew when we could handle a little bit more. If you ask Viktor if you can ride a boulder, he’ll oblige :)The scenery was unbelievable.Truly.The lodge itself very quickly feels like home. The staff are all warm and eager to help with any queries and the cabins themselves are clean, comfortable and finished to a very high standard. Our stay was the height of a two week trip through Peru and Ecuador and we’re already keen to return.Gear was in good condition. Also, the chips and guacamole deserve a special mention. Full marks.

I regularly do river rafting in different countries. This trip organised by Tim (River People) in Tena is one of the best I have ever done. The rafting was sage and a lot of fun, the river and the surroundings were gorgeous as we saw amazing forests, some wildlife and beautiful waterfalls. The lunch was delicious. All in all a very memorable trip down a beautiful river - I hope I get to do it again. Very friendly, safe and professional. What else do you want. Dimple

River people gave us the greatest level of customer service we've ever experienced. There had been very heavy rainfall and the rivers were running incredibly high so on the morning we went out we couldn't do the Jondachi as hoped. Instead we went out on the Jatanyacu to ensure safety and had to avoid many of the rapids for the same reason. As a result the journey was completed in half the standard time and we didn't get the adrenaline buzz we were after having previously rafted class 4+. Tim offered us a refund or a free day on the Jondachi. We took the Jondachi and went out with Tim and 3 guides to ensure our safety with conditions still being potentially dicey. It was a mind blowing experience. The river and scenery was breathtaking, stunning. The guides were great guys who took their jobs seriously with huge smiles on their faces, and you could tell by the way they communicated that they'd worked with each other for years as a team and were great mates. Victor had 15 years experience with River people and was incredibly diligent from explaining upcoming rapids to pointing out wildlife. You felt really safe under his guidance. Overall it was a truly humbling level of customer service on a human level. Tim was a really inspirational and big hearted guy who went above and beyond ensuring we had a great time. I can't recommend these guys enough, even the food offered was excellent with plenty left to spare.
